The brief was simple: a primary bath that felt like stepping out of the house and into something quieter. The client had a particular affinity for the coast — not the bright, sandy version, but the cooler, greener, more overcast version. The kind of coast where the water is deep and the light is soft.
We used a honed blue-gray limestone for the floors and shower surround — a stone that reads almost like slate in certain lights and almost like sky in others. The fixtures are unlacquered nickel, which ages toward that same cool silver tone. The single piece of color comes from a vintage mirror with a tortoiseshell frame, found at an antique market in Chicago and refinished to its original warmth.
The result is a room that feels both specific and somehow universal — one of those spaces that seems to exist slightly outside of time.
